The benefits of omega 3 fish oil are well documented. But many people do not realise that it is essential to maintain a balance between omega 6 and omega 3. Unfortunately many people have a omega 6/omega 3 ratio of 20/1 and need to reduce their intake of omega 6. Experts vary in the ratio they recommend, but people should try to achieve a ratio of between 5/1 and 10/1 and some nutritionists suggest 3/1. Meat is high in omega 6 and to maintain a good balance this should be reduced and more fruit, fish and whole grains eaten.

Eating food containing omega 3 has been shown to help overcome heart problems. This includes lowering high cholesterol, improving blood pressure and preventing the formation of clots that may result in a stroke. Oily fish include salmon, herring, mackerel and sardine A recommended two portions of fish high in omega 3 should be eaten each week. Some people are concerned about the risk of absorbing mercury from fish and pregnant women and children could be at risk. If you are bothered, consult your doctor about the amount of fish to consume and consider taking a fish oil supplement produced by a reputable manufacturer instead.

Many people take omega 3 to relieve the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis or simply to prevent joint problems from developing. Omega 3 has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. For those suffering from osteoporosis ( bone loss), omega 3 can help to slow the loss of bone and in some cases there has been an increase in the build up of bone calcium.

There has been research into the benefits of omega 3 fish oil for children. Improvements in standards of literacy have been shown, as well as being beneficial when taken by ADHD sufferers. Some companies produce omega 3 vitamin capsules specifically for children.

There is continuing research into the benefits of omega 3 fish oil. Mental health problems, bipolar disorder, bowel disease, diabetes and a number of cancers are being investigated. However such research is ongoing and no-one suffering from any health condition should undertake treatment without first consulting their physician.
